The site investigation encountered a fill layer overlying natural silty sand alluvium. The fill was high plasticity sandy clay exhibiting high strength when desiccated, which caused excessive penetration resistance when changing holes and elevated hydraulic conductivity (i.e. poor drainage). These conditions culminated in challenging conditions for maintaining a healthy green, one of the key drivers leading to the choice of re-building the green, as well as the opportunity to improve playability by increasing the overall size and shape of the complex.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

Earthworks at 10th Green<\/p><\/div>\n

The problematic fill layer was removed, including some over-excavation of the underlying alluvium, which was stockpiled and later borrowed to build the raised undulating green surrounds. The excavation was backfilled with clean sand imported from a local site to build and shape the finished green surface level. The green complex was designed by Jeff Holloway and executed by a local earthworks sub-contractor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Competed earthworks prior to turf<\/p><\/div>\n

The green surrounds were turfed in-house by Chinderah Golf staff using two different grass varieties. The green was stolonised using special machinery, a process where grass roots\/stems are taken from an existing green and planted directly into the soil where they grow and spread across the surface. The process had to repeated due to the unusually wet and cold weather experienced during November, which caused the first batch of stolons to rot and die.<\/p>\n

The grasses are fully irrigated with a built-in sprinkler system surrounding the green. Tree-branch lopping has also been completed above the tee and on both sides of the fairway to widen the playing field and increase sunlight penetration.\u00a0<\/p>\n
